LM7905 IC is one of the most commonly used Negative Voltage Regulator in Electronic circuits to provide a regulated output of -5V. It has 3 terminals in the TO-220 power package and it can handle upto 1.5A current. It dissipates the excess voltage in the form of heat so you need to use a heat sink along with it to make sure it is working properly. LM7905 regulators employ internal current limiting safe area protection and thermal shutdown for protection against virtually all overload conditions. The low ground pin current of the LM7905 allows the output voltage to be easily boosted above the preset value with a resistor divider. It is commonly used in Regulated power supply, as a current limiter in certain applications, constant -5V supply for OPAMP operation, etc. If you want a negative +5V Voltage Regulator check out LM7805 IC.
